SCALE & DIMENSION - HOW TO RESIZE A DESIGN SO IT FITS THE WALL
Here is the wall divided into 5 sections ( 16.5ft wide x 6.5 ft tall)

Here are the dimensions for each of the 5 sections. You will need to make your design fit these proportions.
sketch_panels.pdfI drew one inch for one foot. To scale this to fit to paper you are working. Match the corner of your page to the left corners of this image, draw a vertical line up from the length of your paper / page. Where it meet the diagonal line is the height of your design. Draw a horizontal line across from there. Download a printable template.

Tues. Nov 29th - Spray techniques & making masks

Projecting onto wall - what it took.
Sketching out the design the most important part of mural painting - especially when it's a commissioned piece. Your client will expect to see the same design they approved on the wall. Hopefully you designed with the location in mind this is the time you can see all your elements in place to scale and plan for painting, stencils and make adjustments if things don't look so good in place.
  •  Make final design in correct proportions
  • Convert to black and white simple line sketch.
  • Separate elements into background, middle ground & foreground / details
  • divide image into 3 - 4 sections, save each as a jpg.
  • Measure out on wall top line and bottom line especially if wall is not straight and you are doing lettering etc. Use a washable crayon or chalk / charcoal.
  • Wait until it's dark enough to project.

  • Wrestle with the projector to get it in position for image to line up correctly with the wall - using the drawn lines as guides and making the end of each section to  be able to 'stitch' them together.
  • Wish you had another person to help keep the projector in place while you sketch.
  • Use different color markers for different elements order to be painted in. I used black for the letters, red for the elements.
I suggest taking a photo of the wall before we paint it as it may get painted over with the background, plus any details you may want and measure  / trace out your portion for size and reference later.
